Why “Hire Possibilities”?

The name of my company came to me during the pandemic. I knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur, and my passion had always been around hiring. At Amazon, I had been a Bar Raiser, an entrusted steward on interview loops for teams across the company. When I was on maternity leave, I realized I enjoyed that role more than my day-to-day program manager work. So I started my own company, helping job seekers and hiring managers improve their interview skills.

The name Hire Possibilities struck me because it was never meant to be limited to interview skills. It’s a play on my experience in hiring and the possibilities that open up when you hire the right person or land the right job. And Higher Possibilities? The opportunities are absolutely endless.

This year, I decided to bring together my background in property management and hiring. As the president of the house corporation board for Alpha Phi Sorority at both UW and WSU and as a landlord for our rental house, I have spent more than 16 years vetting vendors for repairs, maintenance, and improvements. I’ve learned a great deal about who to trust and how to find skilled professionals who do excellent work.

When I talk to friends and family about their experiences, especially women, they often say they don’t know where to start or who they can trust when it comes to home repairs. When I told them about this business, I heard sighs of relief. So many women have a backlog of home projects they’ve been putting off simply because they didn’t know who to call. They loved the idea of hiring someone I had already vetted.

Hire Possibilities isn’t just about handyman services. My long-term vision includes plumbers, electricians, cleaning crews, handy people, and property management—everything you need to keep your home running smoothly.

What does Hire Possibilities mean for customers who need handyman services?

Imagine how it will feel when those little tasks that have been piling up are finally taken care of by someone reliable. The mental load lifts, and you get to focus your time on things you actually enjoy.

Have you ever considered hiring a female handyperson? As Gen Z enters the trades, we will likely see more women working in these roles, but for now, it’s still difficult to find tradeswomen who are licensed and bonded in Washington. Many women who live alone feel safer inviting another woman into their home. That option should be available.

What does Hire Possibilities mean for handy people?

Imagine doing what you love without having to spend all your time on billing, marketing, sales, and customer service. Some people don’t want to run a business; they just want to do great work and be fairly compensated for it. When you focus on your strengths, your opportunities for learning and growth expand exponentially.

When I saw the hourly rates for handy people in other job postings, I was shocked. Many of them aren’t even livable wages. My goal with Hire Possibilities is to offer competitive, high hourly wages to 1099 contractors we trust. I want the best people to keep working with us, knowing their skills are valued. The wages we offer provide greater possibilities than standard handywork roles.

Right now, there are barriers to entry for handy people who want to be licensed and bonded in Washington. These barriers disproportionately affect women and people of color. I am committed to working with licensed and bonded 1099 contractors, but I also dream of a future where we can sponsor talented people who want to get bonded and build careers in this industry. We need more skilled professionals, and we should empower them to use their skills for the greater good. If we open more doors, we can help bring more women and people of color into this workforce.
