How We Vet Every Handyperson
You may be wondering how my hiring process differs from what a homeowner might do when looking for someone to work on their home. I’d like to share how I took what I learned from my experience interviewing candidates in tech and applied it to this business. My goal is to find the best handy professionals to support me, my family, friends, and customers.
My process is designed to evaluate each candidate’s experience, safety practices, trustworthiness, customer service skills, and technical ability. It’s not a secret or proprietary process, but it does take time—far more than most homeowners would typically spend when hiring someone. Many homeowners rely on trial and error, which I have never felt comfortable with.
Phone Screen – After reviewing a candidate’s application, I have a brief call with them to learn more about why they applied, confirm their license and bond, and check availability.
Verifying License and Bond – I use the Washington L&I website to validate their license, bond, and insurance.
150+ Skills Assessment – Candidates complete a detailed skills questionnaire, rating their abilities in various categories on a scale of 1 to 10. This helps me understand their strengths and determine how to evaluate them during the hands-on assessment. It also helps me decide what types of projects they are best suited for.
Background Check – I conduct a thorough background check to ensure the safety of our customers.
Interview – I conduct a 45-minute video or in-person interview with each candidate, focusing on behavioral interview questions, problem-solving skills, and how they approach customer relationships.
Reference Checks – I contact 2-3 references to learn more about their experience working with the candidate and how I can best support them in this role.
Hands-on Assessment – I pay the candidate to complete a few small repairs, which I personally evaluate or have one of my consultants with over 20 years of experience assess. This ensures they meet the quality standards our customers expect.
Contractor Agreement – If the candidate passes all steps and we decide to work together, they sign an agreement to follow Hire Possibilities' processes and expectations.
